Municipalities and Regional Districts hold elections every four (4) years. The District of Barriere's Council consists of one (1) Mayor, and six (6) Councillors. The last general local election was held in 2022. In 2025, there was a local bi-election to fill the vacated seat of Mayor and of one Councillor.
This year, 2026, is another General election year. General Election Day is on October 17, 2026.
Residents, Electors and Candidates are urged to check back to this webpage frequently as this page is a fluid page that will be updated frequently with important dates, notices and official announcements. Ensure that you sign up to the District's E-News Subscription service (found on the bottom right of the front page of the District's website: www.barriere.ca) so that you receive up-to-date information throughout the Election process.

Information for Candidates
A person is qualified to be elected and hold office if they meet the following requirements:
- 18 years of age or older on General Voting Day;
- Canadian citizen;
- Resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately prior to the date of submission of nomination documents; and
- Are not disqualified under this Act or any other enactment from voting in British Columbia, or from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or be otherwise disqualified.

Campaign Financing & Advertising

There is no need to pre-register to vote, as the registration of qualified electors will take place at the time of voting. You will be required to make a declaration that you meet the following requirements:
- 18 years of age or older on General Voting Day;
- Canadian citizen;
- resident of B.C. for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
- resident of the District of Barriere, or registered owner of real property for at least 30 days in the District of Barriere;
- not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in the assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.
What to Do If:
I live in the District of Barriere: Resident Electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity.
I own property but do not live in the the District of Barriere: Non-Resident Electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, provide proof of ownership (such as a tax assessment, certificate of title, transfer papers, etc.), and, if there is more than one owner, provide written consent from a majority of the property owners to one owner voting.
Signed forms must be provided to election poll staff prior to voting on voting day (advanced or General)
Additional Information
A person may only vote once per election, even if they own multiple properties or are a resident in multiple properties. A person cannot vote on behalf of a corporation, or as a non-resident property elector based on a property owned wholly or in part by a corporation.

All advanced voting opportunities & General Voting Day, take place at "the Ridge", 4936 Barriere Town Road, Barriere BC, V0E-1E0 between the hours of 8am to 8pm.
